touch integrates OCR technology to fortify customer’s data security and protection

Beirut, November 17, 2025: touch has officially announced the integration of Optical Character Recognition (OCR) technology into its core systems. This advanced solution automates the extraction of textual data from images, converting it into machine-readable format. This move follows direct guidance from the Minister of Telecommunications, Charle El Hajj, to expedite the implementation of robust identity verification protocols across the sector.

This initiative serves as a strategic cornerstone in fortifying Lebanon’s telecommunications industry. By moving beyond basic data matching, the system contributes to national security and the prevention of organized crime.

Key benefits of the OCR implementation include:
  • Enhanced Identity Verification: Automating the electronic matching of official identification documents for higher reliability.
  • Fraud Prevention: Actively reducing the circulation and use of unauthorized SIM cards within the Lebanese territory.
  • Operational Excellence: Increasing the precision and speed of data processing by eliminating human error inherent in manual entry.
  • Regulatory Compliance: Strengthening the Ministry of Telecommunications’ efforts to enforce current laws and digital regulations.
  • Network Integrity: Heightening oversight and auditing standards to ensure maximum protection for both the network and its users.

Karim Salim Salaam, Chairman and General Manager of touch, commented: "OCR technology is a fundamental solution for enhancing oversight and mitigating operational risks. It is a vital catalyst for our strategic transition toward a fully digital ecosystem. This includes Biometric KYC (Know Your Customer) capabilities—such as advanced face detection and identity verification—as well as the imminent rollout of digital signatures in Lebanon and seamless e-wallet integration in preparation for our future financial services."

In the context of identity verification, the OCR system achieves a 98% accuracy rate in extracting critical data—such as names, dates of birth, and document numbers—from scanned or photographed IDs. This technology will be primarily utilized to verify vital documentation, including Biometric KYC forms and complex service agreements, ensuring a secure and seamless experience for all customers.
